Kelly Sports

Today Vanessa and her team of coaches from Kelly Sports showed us how to play basketball, hockey, soccer, tee ball, non stop cricket and scatter ball. We were divided into 12 teams and had fun playing each game from the start of school right up until lunch time . It was lots of fun!

Florrie's mum Liz brought their new Labradoodle puppy Olive for a visit to school yesterday. We put out lots of paper just in case! She was very well behaved and we admired her lovely woolly coat. She was so lovely and soft!

Junior Athletic Sports

Today we held the Junior Athletic Sports on the school field. Room 1 enjoyed having the year 1 students from Room 4 join us for the morning. The sports were a great success and my thanks go to all the wonderful parents from Rooms 1 and 4 who helped with organising, scoring and taking photographs. Congratulations to Joe, Ben, Daniel and Harry who won the Year 1 Boys Relay and to Sarah, Harriet, Ruby and Poppy who won the Year 1 Girls Relay!

Down at the Beach

On Thursday we walked down to Rona Bay beach with our buckets and spades. Tom, Daniel, Blaine and Lachlan collected lots of driftwood and everyone helped to build a massive castle with a moat and bridges around it. It was a hot sunny day and our UV bracelets turned bright colours and reminded us that the ultraviolet radiation level was high! We stopped building to rub in extra sunscreen!

Avalon Park

On Wednesday we enjoyed a great day at Avalon Park!
We wore our UV bracelets and covered up with hats and sunscreen!
Our bracelet colours were so bright we could see the UV level was high!

EOTC Week

This week we are enjoying lots of activities outside the classroom!
On Tuesday we made our Ultra Violet light sensitive bead bracelets to wear during the week.
These opaque beads contain a chemical which changes colour when exposed to UV radiation. Take them away from the UV radiation and they change back to their opaque colour. These beads can change colour over and over again.
Inside the classroom they are pale.
Outside they react according to the intensity of the sunlight.
A good reminder to protect ourselves from the sun even on cloudy days!

Silent Art Auction 2nd December

Room 1 have been busy creating 2 pieces of co-operative artwork for the Art Auction. Students chose to crayon and dye a turtle, fish, heart, butterfly or flower. We arranged them in 2 frames and are very happy with the finished result. Come and view the finished pictures in Room 1 and bid on one of them on Friday 2nd December!

Sunsmart in the Toaster?

This week in Room 1 we designed an experiment to find out what would happen to a gingerbread man shape as he got hotter and hotter in the toaster! We cut out our gingerbread people from slices of bread and decided how long we wanted to toast them - 1, 2, 3, 4 or 5 on the heat scale. We predicted they would get browner and browner as the toaster got hotter and hotter! This is what happened.
We were right! The gingerbread people got browner and browner. How could we stop them from getting burned?
We can be sunsmart and cover up from the sun. Could we cover up a gingerbread person and protect him from the heat too?
Lachlan made him some tin foil trousers and popped him in the toaster.
Everyone was amazed! He was safe from the heat under his trousers!
WE will all make sure we cover up in the sun too!

Today Room 1 enjoyed dancing Howdy Partner on the stage at school assembly! Mrs Hooke taught us how to make up interesting actions for our partner to copy until it was time to swap over so the other person had a turn to be the leader. It was great fun! Thank you to the mums and dads who came to watch!

Learning to Play Cricket

On Wednesday Ryan, Tama and Celia from Cricket Wellington came to school to teach Rooms 1, 2 and 3 some introductory cricket skills in the hall. The most important thing we learned was to keep your eye on the ball! We had great fun and some children are keen to learn to play cricket as a summer sport. Cricket coaching takes place on Friday evenings at the Rec.

UV Frisbees

This term we are investigating how and why we need to keep safe in the sun.
Today we used a special white frisbee to help us check whether we need to wear a sunhat on a cloudy day.
Our white frisbee changes colour to orange on contact with ultraviolet light from the sun.
The darker orange it gets the more you have to protect your skin from the sun.
Ultraviolet light harms our skin! Our frisbee turned light orange so we could see that some ultraviolet rays were shining down on us even though it was a cloudy day!
We are going to wear our sunhats even when it is cloudy!

Today lots of children came back to school at 5pm for the junior disco. We had a DJ who played cool music for everyone to dance to. All the curtains were closed to make it dark enough for the disco lights and you could buy sparkly pendants, rings and neon bracelets that glowed in the dark! Lots of teachers came and Mums and Dads were invited to join in too. At the end everyone had an iceblock to cool down. It was lots of fun!

Rugby World Cup

Technology-Making Fridge Magnets

Our inquiry topic this term has been Mighty Magnets. During this technology unit we investigated ways that magnets are used to help us in our daily lives. We decided to make our own fridge magnets to hold our spelling or maths rockets to the fridge at home. First the children selected some materials to make their magnets and checked them out for suitability. When they were happy with their choice they sketched their design plan. The children followed this plan to make their fridge magnet and then tested whether it could hold up their spelling or maths rocket. They all did! Well done Room1!

Noah the Magician!

Today Noah brought his Magician's Theatre to Room 1 and presented a magic show! He brought some of his Room 11 buddies to help him out. We saw the amazing appearing tiger, the disappearing lady and the ball that appeared magically under the cone! Andrew taught us some juggling skills while the show was being set up. Room 1 children were chosen to say the magic spells and wave the magic wand! Everybody loved it. Thank you Noah, you are a wonderful magician!

Wearable Arts

Performing Arts with Mrs Hooke

Every Thursday for the past 4 weeks Room1 have been enjoying a movement and dance programme with Mrs Hooke. We have been learning about rhythm and beat and have been practising moving to different types of music. Everyone loves it!

Year 1&2 Assembly

On Friday it was Room 1's turn to organise the Year 1 & 2 assembly. Blaine and Sarah were our wonderful presenters! Esme, Amelia L, Florence, Ben,Harriet and Petra presented a play called The Ant and the Grasshoppers. Artemisia and Harry talked about our Slinky Malinki artwork. Well done Room1! You all worked very hard and I was very proud of you all. So were all the mums and dads who came to watch!

Conservation Week Clean Up!

Several junior classes went down to the beach on Friday to check out the shoreline for litter. The children worked in pairs - one was the 'spotter' who pointed to the litter and their partner, wearing a disposable glove', was the 'picker upper'. Most of the litter was paper wrappers but we were sad to find some plastic rings that could get caught around the necks of birds or other animals.
We had to be careful not to step on plants growing in the dunes too!

International Literacy Day today

September 8th is International Literacy Day. In Room 1 we shared favourite picture books with our Room 11 buddies. Joe and Abby are holding gift packs with a picture book inside that all babies born today in Wellington will be given. It is never to early to enjoy books! Mrs Chao and Mrs Ryan are delivering them today for the Wellington Literacy Association, of which they are committee members. At lunchtime Mrs Chao and Mrs Ryan read stories in the school library.

Magnetism - Science and Technology!

Our Science inquiry last term involved magnets. This term in our inquiry we are using magnets as part of a technology investigation.

We are exploring ways we can use magnets and will design our own fridge magnets using different materials. The fridge magnet we make must meet a set of criteria - especially the one that says it must be strong enough to hold our reading or spelling rockets onto our fridge at home.

Making magnetic fishing games gave us the opportunity to experiment with the strength of magnets. We enjoyed sharing them with our big buddies.

The Gingerbread Man

In room 1 we are learning to write a recount of a fairy story. First we draw a row of brainstorm sketches in our writing books to get the events in the right order. Next we write a sentence about each sketch, trying to use some WOW (interesting) words to describe what is happening. Some of us are even learning how to use speech marks! Muritai School students are lucky to have many opportunities to extend themselves in a variety of activities. Last Saturday morning the Under 6 Rippa Rugby team played in the school grounds. This team has students from Rooms 1, 2 and 3. I was so impressed with the way they worked as a team to score! Great skills boys! Well done coaches! I hope to check out some more sports over the next few weeks.

Today we could come to school dressed as a book character in exchange for a coin donation as it is International Literacy week. We are raising money to buy books for a school in Nepal. It was also Calvin's last day as his family are moving back to South Carolina. His mum Sherry brought some cupcakes to share and everyone got treats his grandparents brought from America. Thank you Calvin, we loved having you in Room 1 and we will miss you!

Room 1 have been at school for 100 days this year!
We are 100 days smarter!
We celebrated by having a maths day focusing on number 100!
We made lots of collections of 100 objects and estimated then checked how far a row of 100 biscuits would stretch across the classroom. We iced and decorated the biscuits and shared them with our Room 11 buddy class. We can all count to 100!

Physical Education focus: Folk Dancing

On Friday Room 1 visited the Electrotechnology Department and other labs of interest at WelTec in Petone. We were invited by Joe's mum Caryn. The tutors organised a special programme for us with lots of exciting activities about the topics we have been studying at school - Magnetism, Sound and Electricity. Room 1 think that WelTec could be a good place to learn more about electricity and engineering when they are older! We thank Mel, Trevor, Guy and John at WelTec for providing such a wonderful learning experience and answering all our questions!

Painting Biscuit Bear

We read the story of Biscuit Bear and decided to paint him! Our painting focus is to mix colours to obtain different shades and to experiment with different brush techniques. To paint Biscuit Bear we dabbed on the paint with the tip of the brush. We are very proud of our Biscuit Bears!

This week Room 1 were lucky to have a wonderful Malaysian teacher trainee working with us in Room1! Kiran quickly became a favourite helper and the class loved to listen to her musical accent when she read stories. She shared a slide show about Malaysian food and cooked some special treats for us. Our Writing : How to make a Book.

In Room1 we are learning how to write instructions - a sequenced explanation of how something happened.
Last week we especially enjoyed reading and discussing the illustrations in a big book Jolly Jumping Jellybeans. We made and illustrated our own book and wrote down how we did it, trying our best to get everything in the right order. We hope you enjoy reading our first try at writing instructions.

Celebrating Matariki: June 4th this year

Pania's mother, Arini Poutu, enthralled Rooms 1, 2 & 3 with a wonderful presentation about Matariki. The appearance in the eastern sky at this time of year of the seven star constellation known as Matariki defines the start of the Maori New Year. We learned a special song to sing and heard how Matariki is a time of family celebration and a time to look forward to the coming year. We watched a DVD of Pania, Kahu and their big brother Tane performing kapa haka with the Ngati Poneke Young Maori Club at the celebration of Matariki at Te Papa. Pania demonstrated the poi and Arini read us all a traditional Maori story. Thank you Arini and Pania!

Maths:Telling the Time

Room 1 have been learning to tell the time on the classroom clock.
Every one has made their own clock face with movable hour and minute hands.
First we learned the hour times during the school day, matching our model clocks to the hour times on the real classroom clock. After that, we repeated the process with half hour times during the day. We are pretty good at telling the time now and keep up the practice outside by playing What's the Time Mr Wolf?

Blending colour: Rainbow Fish

We are learning to mix and blend paint to create our art work. These rainbow fish began as white crayon sketches on black paper. Red and blue paint was mixed and increasing amounts of white blended to make lighter and lighter shades.

Sounds of science:Talking on the Telephone

We were so lucky to have our big Room 11 buddies to help us make our paper cup telephones! It was tricky to to thread the string through the paper cups so their longer fingers were a great help! Our question for investigation was to find the best way to use the telephone to hear your partner talking. Rooms 1 & 11 quickly discovered that pulling the string tight produces the biggest vibrations and the loudest sounds! Thanks buddies!

Sound Waves

When we make sounds,vibrations pass through the air and other materials to meet our ears. Room 1 wanted to to see what vibrations looked like so we tried an experiment to find out. We filled a tray with water and waited till the water was really still. Amelia dropped in a little bead and we could see the little ripples as it hit the water. These ripples are like the vibrations of a soft sound. Artemisia dropped in a small stone. The ripples are bigger, like the vibrations of a louder sound. Daniel's rock made a huge splash, so we decided it was too big!

Keeping Healthy with our Buddies

Our big buddies from Room11 visited us to share some special information about keeping Happy and Healthy at the beginning of the term! They all made their little buddy a special pamphlet about eating healthy food, getting lots of sleep, drinking water and getting enough exercise. Room 1 are practising each day for the cross country run. We are learning some warm up exercises before we run and finish with cool down exercises afterwards. Remember to wear your running shoes every day!

Exploring Circuits

Room 1 have been experimenting with bulbs,wires,alligator clips and batteries! The student challenge was to make the light bulb glow. Every one worked out that all the items had to be connected to each other so the current from the battery could flow in a circuit or loop, just like in the ghost ball experiment last week.

Jumping Frogs

We are investigating different kinds of electricity.

We created static electricity when we rubbed a balloon on our hair.

We then picked up our “jumping frogs” (frog faces drawn on green paper)!

The electrical charge created by rubbing the balloon attracted the bits of paper.

On Friday we soaked orange and green of M & M's in water to see what would happen. The colours dissolved off the M & M's but did not mix in the water! We are not sure why so we will investigate this next week!

Squishy Eggs

On Thursday we soaked a raw egg in vinegar. The acid in the vinegar is beginning to change the eggshell.
The egg with the face is Mr Control. We will not soak him.

We will have to wait till Monday to see what happens next! We predict the egg in vinegar will become soft and squishy but Mr Control egg will stay the same!

Blowing up a Balloon

On Wednesday we blew up a balloon with gas we made by mixing baking soda and vinegar in a balloon. The gas was carbon dioxide.

Easter Fun!

On the last day of the term, Room 11 made cardboard eggs for their buddies and hid them in the playground. When the eggs were found, their buddy gave them a real Easter egg. The little buddies also hid an egg around Room 1 for their big buddies to find.
Room 11 taught their buddies the Easter bunny poem. The little buddies were so good at the actions and very cute .

Our inquiry "Here's our History" has been a major focus, with the trip to Pataka Museum for a hands on heritage programme and grandparents and grandfriends visiting on Grandparent's Day. Eddie Quansar African drummer

Today we were very lucky to have Eddie Quansah, an African drummer originally from Ghana, entertain us with a concert at school. Eddie explained the importance of drumming in African culture and played many kinds of traditional drums for us.

Room1 were so excited that today was Grandparent's Day! We have all been working hard learning about our Family Trees, drawing and writing about our grandparents, learning songs to sing and collecting up special things that grandparents have given us.
We had a wonderful afternoon showing and sharing with you and a delicious afternoon tea!

Presenting at Junior Assembly

On Friday it was Room1's turn to organise Junior Assembly. Emma and Lachlan were our presenters and were wonderful at talking into the microphone! We showed our stories about our trip to Pataka and our shape lanterns. We were the best class at sitting quietly to listen so we were awarded "Assembly Bear" for the next 2 weeks. Well done Emma, Lachlan and all of Room 1!

Arts Festival

Our visit to the Capital E Performing Arts Festival began with a trip to Wellington on a double decker bus! Room 1 were so excited! We saw 3 shows and walked between each with a Capital E host to show us the way. We saw Grimace, a show with mixed up nursery rhymes, Passing Wind, about making and playing musical instuments and Boats, with 2 sailors telling stories on a desert island. Room 1's favourite was Passing Wind. We are going to try making a flute from a carrot!

In Room1 we have been talking about being proud of who we are - our achievements, our values and our goals. Talking about our strengths helps us identify things we need to work on and gives us the determination to keep on trying even when things are tricky! We are learning about trying our best, perseverance and determination.

Science with our buddies - Does coke affect our teeth?

Our buddy class Room 11 are investigating "does coke affect our teeth?" They invited us to see what happens when you compare an egg soaked in coca cola for a short time and brushed with toothpaste, an egg soaked in coke for long periods and "Mr Control", a plain egg. Egg shells make good substitute "teeth"!
Scientist Harriet helped with the tooth brushing.
We used our eyes to observe, and our fingers to feel any changes.
Mr Control was clean and smooth, the brushed egg brownish and the soaked egg blotchy and rough to touch.
Room 1 now think that coca cola is a "sometimes treat" and they should brush their teeth afterwards!

Pataka Visit

As part of our current inquiry "Here's our History" we visited Pataka Museum in Porirua.
Heritage Hands On teacher Linda helped us dress like children did 100 years ago! We wrote on slates and used ink pens, did the washing with a washboard and a mangle, played marbles and then and now matching games. We learned that many daily activities 100 years ago involved time consuming hard work and inventions have made life easier for us. We will ask our grandparents about daily life when they were children when they visit us on Grandparent's Day in April.
We ate our lunch at Aotea Lagoon and had a play on the new adventure playground there before returning to school on the bus. Thank you to all the parent helpers who helped make the day a wonderful experience!

Sea Week

All the Junior classes visited Rona Bay Beach this week as part of Sea Week. Room 1 looked at the difference between low and high tide and enjoyed the opportunity to work together to build sandcastles and dig dams! We used the experience as motivation for recount writing and have written wonderful descriptive stories about visiting the beach! We would love to share these with you in the classroom!

Graphing our Smarties

Over the past 4 weeks Room 1 has carried out a number of statistical observations during our mathematics lessons. We have been learning to record our information in various ways. Our favourite lesson was graphing the colours of the smarties in each of our boxes!

Laptops

Today our Room 11 Buddies helped us explore KidPix, Room 1's favourite art and drawing computer programme. Room 1 are learning to use the laptop touch pads as well as a mouse.
We take turns to use the pod of laptops in our classroom.

Hatching a Monarch Butterfly

Over the past 3 weeks we watched our monarch caterpillar grow bigger and bigger and become a chrysalis. Last Friday we watched it hatch into a butterfly! We compared it with the picture in our butterfly book and took it outside to a bush to set it free. We made butterfly kites to take home.

Summer Swimming

This year Muritai school is taking part in the Kiwi Swimsafe Safety in the Water programme. We have swim school coaches helping the teachers and students learn correct technique. Room 1's goal is to have as many students as possible floating confidently on their front and on their back. We are well on the way to achieving this! All the students will be awarded certificates of achievement at the end of the course. Thank you to all the parents who are helping us get changed without losing any clothing!

Our Self Portraits

Room1 have been completing their self portraits using black pens, pastels and dye. They looked carefully at the size of different parts of their bodies and used the whole sheet of paper with their head at the top, feet at the bottom.
We hope you like them as much as we do!

Meeting our New Big Buddies.

Today Room 11 met their new little buddies from Room 1.
We read books and talked together today and are meeting our buddies again next week for an activity.
Room 11 are lucky to be big buddies this year and are really excited about sharing with Room 1.

Christmas Party

We shared a super Christmas lunch with our Room 11 buddies to end the school year.
A special thank you to the big buddies who all made Christmas cards for us!
Thank you too to all the Room 1 & 11 parents who sent along the beautiful food.
Ex pupils Ella and Molly were a great help too!
Room 1 played pass the parcel and had a lucky dip as well!

I thank all parents and care givers for all your support this year and wish you and your children a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year.

Classes start again on Wednesday 2nd February.

Our Christmas Concert

Everyone in the Junior syndicate practised hard for today's Christmas Concert!
We all dressed in Christmas colours and brought some food to share afterwards.
We sang 7 songs and all the mums, dads and other visitors clapped and clapped. Everyone enjoyed themselves and it was great to have such a wonderful audience!

Playground Models

Today Room1 designed and constructed models of their favourite playground equipment.
The most popular items were high slides, climbing walls, trampolines, sandpits and swings.
We had a vote and would like a sandpit in our school playground. We will write to Mr Bird to tell him.

Avalon Park

On Thursday we visited Avalon Park as part of our Term 4 Inquiry Changes in our Playground. We had a wonderful time exploring and playing on all the equipment. We are designing our own model playgrounds this week!

Parachute Games!

Today we joined up with Room 3 to play parachute games as part of our EOTC week. We all had to work co-operatively to lift our arms together to capture the air we needed to turn the parachute into a giant tent. When we did we could all fit underneath and play games! Then we used the trapped air to bounce balls on the top! It was great fun!

Winter Wonderland

As part of EOTC week Year 1& 2 classes visited Winter Wonderland at Capital E today. We each wrote some wishes to post in the wishing tree in the enchanted forest! Father Christmas's elf Cinnamon told us a story, we climbed on the climbing wall, searched for 10 gingerbread men in the gingerbread house and made a felt mouse decoration with a candy cane tail to hang on our Christmas trees at home. Before we left to come back to school on the bus Father Christmas asked us what we would like for Christmas! We all had a wonderful time and thank you to the mums & dads who came with us!

Zebong-Teller of Tales

Today Year 1& 2 began Outdoor Education Week with a visit by Zebong, the Storyteller. He had a special backdrop which was painted with a spooky castle with special flaps on it. Under the flaps were pictures that helped tell a fairy tale with a wicked witch, a troll, a snake, a king, a queen, a prince and some naughty girls. Zebong chose some teachers and children to act out parts of the story. Esme and James were lucky to be chosen! We all enjoyed the show and the detailed questions the children had for Zebong at the end showed that everyone had been listening very carefully!

Dancing at Assembly

Last week we had our last dance session with Mrs Hooke. We performed a short dance at assembly to share our learning. We hope everyone enjoyed watching as much as we enjoyed dancing!

Creeping Caterpillars

This term we are exploring different printing techniques. Our creeping caterpillars are sponge printed circles with details painted on later with a brush. Our letter of the week was Ll, so we drew on the Ll shaped legs with black felt pens at handwriting time!

Milo Cricket

Today Rooms 1,3, and 16 joined together to have a go.
We learned some cricket skills and how to keep safe when running with a cricket bat.
